Refilwe Sebothoma is a visionary entrepreneur who is transforming lives in South Africa. Growing up in Marikana, a mining community in the North West, she faced the harsh realities of poverty. Despite adversity, she dreamed big, fueled by her single mother’s and grandmother’s resilience. However, Sebothoma’s experiences with energy insecurity drive her mission to combat energy poverty through Hakem Energies.
In her country, South Africa, the energy poverty crisis affects millions, forcing them to rely on unsafe and expensive alternatives. Daily, approximately 48 victims of “firewood rape” are reported, while 9,000 informal settlement shack fires occurred in FY2022. Paraffin poisoning hospitalises 24,000 annually, with 171 children dying from ingestion. Eleven per cent of lung cancer deaths are attributed to household pollution. Energy insecurity exacerbates poverty and inequality stemming from inadequate infrastructure and affordability.
Sebothoma’s 13-year entrepreneurial journey is driven by a passion to uplift communities. Her vision for Hakem Energies stems from understanding energy poverty’s devastating effects. Raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to see her through school, she understood that the path out of poverty would require strong determination and hard work. This fueled her determination to create change.

Hakem Energies LPG distribution model
Hakem Energies pioneers affordable, sustainable energy solutions for underprivileged communities. RefilwenSebothoma developed containerised models for safe Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution, recognising the need for reliable energy. Their innovative approach includes portable 5kg cylinders and pay-as-you-use refills, making energy accessible and affordable. By partnering with local businesses and offering training programs, Hakem Energies empowers communities to manage their energy needs. They also provide education on LPG safety and usage, ensuring communities understand the benefits and risks.

Hakem Energies’ impact extends beyond energy access, creating jobs, educating communities, and saving lives. Sebothoma plans to open five to ten more LPG outlets and establish a bulk distribution depot, making clean energy accessible. This expansion generates employment opportunities in the North West Province, stimulating local economic growth.

Driven by her vision, Hakem Energies is poised for growth. Plans include partnering with rural African entrepreneurs and challenging traditional energy norms. Education on safe LP Gas usage remains a priority, reducing accident risks. Aiming to open more outlets and establish a bulk distribution depot, Hakem Energies will create jobs, stimulate local economies, and increase energy accessibility.
