Chioma Ukpabi is addressing youth unemployment in Nigeria by providing job opportunities and practical skills through technology-driven training.
Chioma Ukpabi’s journey into social entrepreneurship began while she was teaching at a community school. There, she encountered firsthand the economic and structural barriers preventing many talented but underserved youths from accessing quality education and employable skills. She observed that despite their academic efforts, many young people remained locked in poverty due to a lack of market-relevant competencies.
This experience highlighted a significant disconnect between the academic curriculum and the practical skills needed in a modern economy. Rather than ignore the issue, Ukpabi decided to tackle it head-on by promoting a model of education that combined vocational training with digital access and job linkage. Her goal was to help young people move from learning to earning, particularly in low-income communities.
Launching a tech-enabled skills platform
In 2021, Ukpabi partnered with Kelvin Steve to launch Skill Up With Kahdsole (SUWK), a social tech start-up aimed at closing the opportunity gap for Nigerian youth. The initiative combines skill acquisition with employability support through two core platforms: SUWK Learn, a tutor-led, hybrid vocational training system, and SUWK Work, a job marketplace that connects graduates to employment or entrepreneurial opportunities.
SUWK, a platform offering training in carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation, and digital skills, provides participants with certifications and mentorship to apply their new skills.
Reports indicate that SUWK has reached over 2,800 beneficiaries across Nigeria, with most graduates securing employment or starting small businesses. The platform also boasts over 40 training hubs nationwide, ensuring accessible skill development in various communities.
Recognitions
Chioma Ukpabi’s work has garnered national and international recognition. In 2022, Junior Chamber International (JCI) named her one of the Outstanding Young Persons in Nigeria in the Business and Entrepreneurship category. She has also been featured in entrepreneurship platforms such as MentHer Magazine’s Top 20 Social Impact Founders and Global Women’s Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs.
