Wangari Kuria, the founder and CEO of Farmer On Fire Ltd., has developed a platform designed to empower smallholder farmers in Kenya and beyond. Kuria grew up in Nyahururu, an area renowned for agricultural productivity, where farming was a fundamental part of her upbringing. She has stated that witnessing the challenges faced by small-scale farmers, such as climate pressures and limited financial resources, inspired her to pursue a career in agriculture.
Her academic background includes studies in business and strategic management, complemented by further research in agriculture and climate change. These interests have shaped her focus on climate-resilient farming and sustainable agribusiness.
Establishing Farmer On Fire Ltd.
Kuria founded Farmer On Fire Ltd. in 2018. The organisation functions as a training and support hub for smallholder farmers, utilising both digital platforms and demonstration farms. Through online sessions and hands-on training, thousands of farmers have participated in its programmes, with the organisation reporting engagement from more than 100,000 individuals with its digital content.
Kuria’s approach to agribusiness combines technology, education, and community participation. Farmer On Fire equips farmers with essential agronomic knowledge, innovative farming techniques, and sustainability practices.
The model promotes practical methods such as mushroom cultivation and insect farming using black soldier fly larvae—techniques designed to diversify income sources and address environmental challenges. Farmers are also introduced to water conservation practices and methods to enhance soil fertility.
Women remain a key focus, with initiatives aimed at supporting single mothers and women in pastoralist communities. Training often integrates agricultural methods with financial literacy and community savings schemes, enabling participants to establish small agribusinesses.
Partnerships and reach
Farmer On Fire Ltd. has collaborated with various institutions, including the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Heifer International, and Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture. It has also partnered with agricultural equipment providers such as John Deere. These alliances have supplied resources, training, and in some cases, market opportunities for smallholder farmers.
The organisation’s activities extend beyond Kenya. Its digital reach enables engagement with farmers in other African nations, although its primary training hubs remain local.
Kuria’s work has garnered international recognition. In 2023, she received the Global Citizen Prize (Kenya’s Citizen Award) for her contributions to food security and women’s empowerment. She has also been featured in lists spotlighting young African leaders.
Through education, empowerment, innovation, and strategic partnerships, Wangari has established a platform that elevates smallholder farmers, promotes sustainable practices, and advances the continent’s agricultural future.
