In Nigeria, where access to quality oral healthcare remains a challenge, vulnerable populations bear the burden of preventable diseases. Despite advancements in global dentistry, millions still suffer without primary oral care. This pressing issue became a personal mission for Dr. Adekemi Adeniyan, a visionary dentist determined to bridge the gap in access to oral health services and education.
Oral diseases affect more than 3.9 billion people worldwide, with dental caries and periodontal disease being the most widespread. In Nigeria, over half of the adult population is impacted, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, rural areas, and the uninsured. The lack of accessible dental services, poor integration with general healthcare, and socioeconomic challenges exacerbate these disparities. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes, health disparities are preventable differences in disease burden among disadvantaged groups—a reality Adekemi Adeniyan is determined to change.
Her journey began with firsthand encounters in rural Nigeria, where the consequences of limited dental care were stark and devastating. After earning her medical degree from Ternopil National Medical University in Ukraine and completing further studies at Lancaster University in the UK, Adeniyan returned to Nigeria to work in underserved areas. It was a mentor’s advice—”If you don’t start today, you’ll never start. It’s not about money; it’s about capital, and people are your capital,”—which propelled her to found the Dentalcare Foundation in 2019.
The Dentalcare Foundation pioneered a unique model that combines free dental care with community education and outreach. Adeniyan’s innovative storytelling approach makes oral care accessible and engaging, especially for children. Her children’s book, “The Girl Who Found Her Smile,” and the animated series, “Anita Says,” creatively promote oral health awareness. Partnering with rural communities, the foundation brings much-needed dental care directly to underserved populations. As Adeniyan emphasizes, “We believe every child deserves a healthy smile.”
Since its inception, the Dentalcare Foundation has made remarkable progress in promoting oral health equity. With over $10,000 raised to support various initiatives, the foundation has provided free dental care to more than 6,000 individuals, transforming lives and fostering healthier smiles. Beyond treatment, education remains a cornerstone of Adeniyan’s mission. The foundation has distributed over 3,000 oral health storybooks and over 6,000 toothbrushes, instilling good hygiene habits and empowering children with essential knowledge.
Adeniyan’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has received prestigious recognitions, including Nigeria’s Woman of the Year in Healthcare and being named among Leading Ladies Africa’s 100 Most Inspiring Women. Her passion and commitment have sparked a movement, illustrating the power of education, community involvement, and persistent advocacy.
