The 13th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) kicked off on November 3, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, with a colourful night of celebration. The festival’s theme, “Indigenous to Global: Cultural Wealth to Global Prosperity,” shone brightly as filmmakers gathered for the opening night. Renowned filmmakers Filson Ali and Lene Børglum were among the top film producers present.
As they mingled with fellow industry players, Filson Ali and Lene Børglum shared their thoughts on the festival. Filson Ali, attending AFRIFF for the first time, was visibly thrilled. “I’m so honoured to be here,” she said, her eyes sparkling. It’s lovely to see so many filmmakers in one house.” Lene Børglum echoed similar sentiments, sharing her excitement to discuss film production and collaborations in the coming days.
With their impressive backgrounds in film production, Filson Ali and Lene Børglum brought unique perspectives to the festival. Filson Ali, a rising star in Scandinavian cinema, co-founded Camera X, a production company renowned for its compelling films and series. Her talent for storytelling was showcased in her hit youth series, “Play & Rewind,” which tackled real-life issues. This success paved the way for her production company, Camera X.
Lene Børglum’s expertise has shaped the European independent film landscape. As a key figure in Zentropa, she secured international financing for critically acclaimed films like Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom” and “Breaking the Waves.” Her production company, Space Rocket Nation, focuses on artistic, edgy films, including Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Only God Forgives” and “The Neon Demon.”
As they settled into the festival atmosphere, Filson and Lene revealed their expectations. Lene looked forward to discovering exceptional films and inspiring individuals, while Filson hoped to expand her professional network and forge new collaborations.
This year’s festival features 150 films from across Africa and the Diaspora, including Michael W. Ndiomu’s crime thriller, “HEADLESS,” which opened the festival. AFRIFF Founder and Festival Director Chioma Ude noted, “African filmmaking is evolving at an incredible pace, with Nigeria at the forefront of this renaissance.” The festival aims to inspire storytellers to explore creative ideologies and techniques that connect with a global audience.
With keynote industry discussions and high-profile networking events, AFRIFF 2024 offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and growth. As the conversation unfolded, it became clear that Filson and Lene were kindred spirits, united by their love for filmmaking.
