The African Agriculture space has witnessed an influx of innovation and tech-driven solutions since the beginning of the decade. Innovators like Dr Catherine Nakalembe are using cutting-edge technologies to determine how people approach crop systems.
Nakalembe was born and raised in Uganda, where her journey into the fields of geospatial science and agriculture began. Her experiences with the challenges faced by smallholder farmers profoundly shaped her career path. Today, Catherine Nakalembe is a highly accomplished geographer, researcher, and champion of sustainable agricultural development. She serves as an Associate Research Professor at the University of Maryland and is the Africa Program Director for NASA Harvest. There, she focuses on using satellite imagery to monitor crop health, predict yields, and assess the impacts of droughts and floods.
In 2017, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) established Harvest, a global multidisciplinary consortium of agriculture and remote sensing experts. This initiative collaborates with farmers, agribusinesses, economists, humanitarian organizations, governments, technology developers, and decision-makers to provide essential agricultural assessments. Harvest employs remote sensing technologies to tackle significant agricultural challenges throughout Africa.
Catherine Nakalembe analyzes data from space to provide timely information that helps farmers and governments make informed decisions about planting, harvesting, and resource allocation. As a result of her work, she has established early warning systems for drought in countries like Uganda, improving food security for 90,000 households.
The information from each research helps communities, governments, and humanitarian organisations to respond quickly to climate crises. It also prepares them to avoid food shortages, reduce the devastating impact of climate-related disasters, and save millions from food insecurity, poverty, and hunger.
She has also helped farmers access tools that were once considered out of reach. By developing user-friendly digital platforms, she empowers farmers with real-time data on weather patterns, soil quality, and crop health data, enabling them to optimise their farming practices.
Nakalembe’s work also extends to policy advocacy. She collaborates with African governments to integrate satellite data into national agricultural monitoring systems. Her efforts have strengthened agricultural policies and promoted sustainable land management practices. Her contributions have bridged the gap between scientific innovation and practical solutions for farmers, governments, and policymakers.
