Processed beverages containing artificial sweeteners and preservatives dominate the African market, yet there’s also a high demand for natural, health-conscious alternatives. The rising incidence of diet-related health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, highlights the urgent need for accessible, nutritious options. So, in 2010, Olubunmi Otufowora, a Nigerian businesswoman and pharmacist, established Boomsky Smoothies to meet this growing need.
Boomsky Smoothies started as a random experiment. During her pregnancy in 2008, Olubunmi Otufowora craved natural fruit blends. Unaware of the term “smoothie” then, she began creating her fresh fruit mixture. As she shared them with colleagues, demand surged unexpectedly. This realisation sparked an entrepreneurial idea that would disrupt the Nigerian beverage industry.
With just 3,000 naira as her initial capital, she produced her first batch for sale. What began as an experiment quickly gained traction, prompting her to invest further in refining her recipes, branding, and scaling operations. As of 2021, Boomsky Smoothies reported approximately ₦20 million annual revenues.
The brand has since become a leading indigenous fruit processing and distribution company, offering 100% natural smoothies and juices to a diverse clientele.
At its inception, the concept of natural, preservative-free smoothies was relatively new in Nigeria. Boomsky Smoothies carved a niche by producing its juice from 11 flavours, catering to diverse consumer preferences, especially health-conscious consumers seeking pure, nutrient-rich beverages.
Fortunately, Boomsky Smoothies is Nigeria’s first fresh fruit brand to be approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) and certified by the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO). This level of regulatory compliance shows Otufowora’s commitment to consumer safety and quality products.
The company actively integrates environmentally sustainable practices; they implement a zero-waste policy by partnering with organic waste recyclers to convert fruit waste into helpful manure or fertilisers.
Boomsky Smoothies started as a solo venture but has now evolved into a structured organisation with 28 employees and an all-female executive leadership. Beyond its leadership structure, The company actively promotes gender inclusion by creating employment opportunities for women, fostering skill development, and advocating for workplace equality.
The brand’s products are now available in more than 50 locations throughout Lagos State, including major fast-food restaurants and supermarkets. Strategic investments, such as acquiring a truck for fresh fruit collection, have streamlined operations significantly. As a result, the brand has established itself as a leading consumer choice.
I went for a field job, and my client offered me the most delicious juice made in Nigeria. To add icing to the cake, it is 100% natural with no sugar or preservatives. I can boldly say I have found the drink for me, and there is no going back.”~Customer Review
