Africa’s energy landscape is marked by two contrasting phenomena – abundant natural resources and widespread energy poverty. With a population growth rate of 2.5% annually, Africa’s energy demand is snowballing, but access to electricity stands at only 57%, and access to clean cooking is at 17%. Despite having significant renewable energy potential, including hydropower, which accounts for 17% of electricity generation on average, Africa still struggles to meet its energy needs. This energy gap hinders economic development and poses health risks. However, Lucia Wamala is leading the charge towards a renewable energy revolution in Africa- paving the way for a sustainable future.
Lucia Bakulumpagi-Wamala, a 41-year-old Ugandan entrepreneur, is disrupting the Ugandan renewable energy sector with her company, Bakulu Power. As a female leader in a male-centric field, she’s dedicated to creating a more inclusive and sustainable future. She founded Bakulu Power to bridge the energy gap in the East African country, focusing on solar mini-grids, clean cooking fuel, and innovative technologies. Her holistic and collaborative approach involves stakeholders from technology companies to community leaders.
Through Bakulu Power, Lucia is developing renewable energy projects prioritising people and the planet. Her team has developed three solar mini-grids on Lake Victoria islands and a biomass production plant in a refugee camp. They also offer auxiliary services in the Buvuma district, the founder’s hometown.
Going global while breaking through local barriers
Lucia’s innovative spirit has earned her recognition globally. She has spoken at prestigious events, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), the United Nations General Assembly, the African Union Summit, and the World Trade Organization Public Forum. As a member of the Africa-Europe High-Level Platform for Sustainable Energy Investments (SEI), she represents Africa’s private sector, which fills us with pride.
Her degree in public administration and specialisation in community intervention equip her to drive positive change in the renewable energy sector. As she continues to break new ground with Bakulu Power, her vision for a sustainable energy future becomes increasingly tangible, filling us with hope and optimism.
Nevertheless, Lucia faces unique challenges despite her achievements, such as developing sustainable energy solutions in areas that need a national grid. Yet, she remains unwavering in her commitment to her vision, working on new projects like solar oxygen systems and integrated primary schools with international partners. Her resilience in the face of these challenges is truly inspiring.
Her plans include expanding Bakulu Power’s impact through strategic partnerships and innovative technologies. She aims to replicate her successful mini-grid model in other areas, promoting economic growth and sustainable development.
