Maryam Bukar Hassan, widely known by her stage name Alhanislam, has been appointed as the first United Nations Global Advocate for Peace under the Peace and Security Pillar. The appointment marks a significant milestone in the global recognition of the role of arts and culture in promoting peace and social justice.
A celebrated Nigerian poet, spoken word artist, and social entrepreneur, Hassan has consistently used her creative voice to address themes of peace, conflict resolution, and youth empowerment. Born in Kaduna State and originally from Borno State, she is the only daughter of the late Nigerian actress Hauwa Maina. She studied Information Technology at Radford University College in Ghana and graduated at the age of 19, later redirecting her focus to the arts and advocacy.
Through her performances and activism, Maryam Hassan has gained both national and international acclaim for her use of poetry as a platform to foster dialogue, healing, and community engagement, particularly among young people and marginalised groups.
Her new role as Global Advocate for Peace will see her supporting the United Nations’ efforts in promoting peace and sustainable development, especially in regions experiencing conflict. Her appointment also spotlights the importance of integrating cultural voices into global peace-building conversations.
This recognition not only highlights Hassan’s achievements but also indicates a broader shift towards embracing non-traditional forms of diplomacy, where creative expression becomes a powerful tool for change.
