Dr Funmi Adewara, a multi-award-winning UK-based Nigerian-British Physician, as the founder of Mobihealth International (Mobihealth), has pioneered a telehealth platform that combines technology with compassion to bring healthcare to underserved communities.
Mobihealth’s mission is to ensure people can access affordable, high-quality healthcare anywhere. The platform bridges the gap between patients and doctors through telemedicine, AI diagnostics, and walk-in clinics, making healthcare more inclusive and accessible.
Founding Mobihealth International
The Cambridge-trained Bioscience entrepreneur has diverse expertise in clinical medicine, pharmaceuticals, and business development in the healthcare and energy industries. However, she grew up in Nigeria, a country with tough healthcare challenges. Adewara understands how a lack of access to quality medical services affects communities.
After training as a medical doctor, specialising in family medicine, she broadened her skills and pursued additional studies in the UK, focusing on business management and innovative technologies.
During her time in the UK, she began to see the potential of telemedicine and digital health in addressing the disparities she had witnessed back home.
The idea for Mobihealth was born from Adewara’s desire to address the healthcare crisis in Africa, where millions lack access to quality medical care. Using her professional experiences, she looked forward to creating a platform that could connect patients to doctors regardless of distance, using modern technology.
So, in 2017, she founded Mobihealth International. Initially, the platform operated pro bono, offering free teleconsultations to test its feasibility and build community trust. By 2020, it transitioned into commercial operations, scaling its services to AI-powered diagnostics, e-prescriptions, and electronic medical records.
The core mission of MobiHealth remains to provide affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare to underserved populations. Through its mobile app, telehealth clinics, and partnerships with international organisations, Mobihealth is transforming healthcare delivery nationwide.
Across Africa, Mobihealth has directly impacted over 100,000 lives. It has about 200 hospitals, labs, pharmacies, 20 integrated telehealth clinics, and more than 5,000 doctors in Nigeria and globally. Its subscriber base continues to grow as more people recognise the value of its telehealth services.
Additionally, it has reduced the time of hospital stay, cost, diagnosis, and treatment by 70%. Access to nutritional support for children has also improved by 60%, while access to maternal and child health resources has increased by 70%.
Mobihealth has formed strategic partnerships with global and national organisations like The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, technology providers, and the Nigerian Air Force who partnered with them to set up telehealth clinics in six states, including Lagos and Abuja, so military personnel and civilians could have access to quality medical care.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Mobihealth was of great help. As hospitals struggled to cope with the surge in cases, the platform provided a safe, convenient alternative for medical consultations.
