However, Ugandan innovator and entrepreneur Dr Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa, founder of Chil AI Lab, is changing this narrative with her AI-powered solution.
In 2020 alone, Africa recorded over 700,000 cancer-related deaths. Cervical and breast cancers are the most prevalent, with inadequate diagnostic facilities and specialised personnel worsening the situation. Cancer diagnoses often come too late, reducing treatment options and survival rates. Patients face significant emotional and financial burdens, disrupting livelihoods and perpetuating poverty.
Kaliisa’s personal experience with cancer sparked her passion to transform Africa’s healthcare landscape. Diagnosed with breast cancer during medical school, she endured the challenges of treatment and recovery. Her mother’s death from cervical cancer had already shown her the devastating consequences of inadequate healthcare. Determined to prevent similar tragedies, Shamim Kaliisa founded Chil AI Lab. Born from a need to extend medical services to those unable to afford or access them, Chil AI Lab leverages AI-powered solutions for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Growing up in rural Uganda, Kaliisa experienced firsthand the limitations of public medical services. In 2019, her company grew from 130 customers in Kampala to 150,000 globally, demonstrating the relevance of the innovation and her commitment to bridging the healthcare gap.

It was in 2017 when I tested positive for cervical cancer. I was very Worried about how I will leaving my Home Periodically to the hospital to consult my doctor. One day I landed onto Chil AI Lab platform called Keti which from that time I use to consult either my doctor or automated consultation, I can just upload my regular x-ray results and the automated assistant or A human doctor interprets for me (it’s me to choose which one to use).- Nakabinga Moreen, a 65-year-old cervical cancer survivor and user of Chil AI Lab.
The conversational chatbot, accessible on various platforms, uses voice prompts to cater to those with seeing and writing disabilities. This feature sets Chil AI Lab apart in Africa, ensuring equal access to healthcare services. The integration of AI has significantly improved cancer diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Patients can upload scanned photos for immediate interpretation, eliminating lengthy wait times.
Chil AI Lab’s impact on African women’s healthcare is remarkable. Since its inception, the company has served over 700,000 women across 10 countries, and countless women have benefited from its innovative services.
Beyond Chil AI Lab, Kaliisa co-founded Chil Femtech Center, further expanding her mission to improve women’s healthcare. This centre focuses on creating solutions addressing female well-being, from reproductive health to economic empowerment.
Through the CHIL AI Group, Kaliisa has diversified into agritech, fintech, and drone technology. The company’s agritech solutions include solar cold sheds and AI-powered pest prediction, enhancing food security and productivity for women farmers. The fintech arm offers smart card savings plans, enabling cancer patients to afford medical costs. Drone services facilitate healthcare, e-commerce, and agricultural deliveries.
Kaliisa’s vision extends beyond healthcare. She believes that helping women solve personal challenges benefits women and the entire family. Her dedication has earned her recognition, including the Forbes Woman Africa Youth Icon Award and selection for the inaugural Future is Female Mentorship Program.
Despite challenges, Kaliisa focuses on expansion and innovation. CHIL AI Lab aims to overcome infrastructure and accessibility barriers, broadening its reach across Africa. Strategic partnerships enhance service delivery and accessibility. With plans to expand into Asia and Latin America, CHIL AI Lab is developing a “Saving Smart Card for Chronic Disease.”
