Sibongile Sambo is a notable figure in South Africa’s aviation sector. As the founder and CEO of SRS Aviation, she became the first Black woman in South Africa to own and manage an aviation company. Born in 1974 in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, Sambo’s path to success was unconventional. Her professional career took a pivotal turn when South Africa Airways rejected her application for a flight attendant position due to height requirements. Rather than letting this setback define her, Sambo sold her car and borrowed money from her family to start her own business. In 2004, she founded SRS Aviation, initially focusing on brokering aviation services. By 2006, the company earned its Air Operating Certificate from the South African Civil Aviation Authority, becoming the first Black-owned aviation company in South Africa to achieve this milestone.
The same year, SRS Aviation secured its first major contract, a cargo transport deal with the South African government, in partnership with another company. This accomplishment marked a turning point for the business, enabling SRS to expand its services. Over the years, the company has grown to offer VIP charters, medical evacuations, air cargo transport, and aerial photography. Today, SRS Aviation provides aircraft maintenance, fleet management, and spare parts sales across Africa. The company also operates retail outlets in major South African airports, solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.
Sambo has consistently demonstrated a commitment to uplifting others. She has prioritised increasing female participation in aviation by supporting women in obtaining private pilot licences and providing employment opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities.
