Dr. Sindy Zemura has dedicated her career to addressing the most pressing challenges faced by vulnerable women, children, and youth in Africa. Through the Southern Africa Embrace (SAE) Foundation, she has worked relentlessly to improve lives by promoting education, gender equality, rural development, and economic independence.
Founded in 2010, the SAE Foundation operates across eight African countries, tackling complex issues ranging from poverty alleviation to gender-based violence. The foundation’s programs offer scholarships to children, empower women in farming and artisanal work, and deliver community-driven solutions that open up lasting opportunities for underserved groups.
Her childhood inspired Zemura’s commitment to service. Her father, a businessman and philanthropist, regularly involved her in charitable activities, taking her to rural communities to help those in need. Although she didn’t fully grasp the importance of giving at the time, those early experiences planted the seeds for her lifelong dedication to service.
Over the years, the SAE Foundation has achieved significant milestones. It has sponsored the education of over 2,000 children, enabling them to attend school and gain access to essential life skills. In South Africa, it launched a project with 20 women artisans that has expanded to benefit over 700 women across Africa. In Malawi, the foundation supports 900 women rice farmers and traders, empowering them financially and improving their quality of life.
One of the foundation’s most significant achievements is its recent accreditation by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This recognition, granted after a rigorous evaluation process, allows the SAE Foundation to contribute to global discussions on education, youth empowerment, and gender equality. It also affirms the foundation’s impact and credibility in driving change.
Zemura’s practice is rooted in a deep understanding of community needs. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation adapted its programs to address urgent challenges. It provided personal protective equipment to scholars while supporting their education, demonstrating its ability to respond to evolving situations.
In Nigeria, the SAE Foundation addresses the country’s high rate of out-of-school children, particularly girls. Sindy Zemura strongly advocates education to break poverty cycles and build brighter futures. The foundation also plans to introduce economic programs for women affected by gender-based violence, helping them regain independence and rebuild their lives.
So far, the social advocate has gained global recognition and has been awarded for her contributions to gender equality, youth empowerment, and HIV awareness. Her leadership has also allowed her to collaborate with major organizations, including UN Women, the African Union, and other United Nations bodies.
Through initiatives that address education, economic stability, and equality, Sindy Zemura has created a framework for lasting transformation.
